Measles outbreaks are occurring in many parts of the world with low measles vaccination rates
Measles is an acute infectious disease caused by the measles virus and is one of the leading causes of death in children. According to estimates by the World Health Organization, in 2016 there were about 89,780 measles deaths, most of which occurred in children under 5 years old. However, it is a disease that can be effectively prevented through the measles vaccination. During the period 2000-2016, measles vaccine prevented about 20.4 million measles deaths worldwide, a decrease of about 84% compared to 2000.
