In the period 2006 - 2009, the Asian Development Bank cooperated with the World Health Organization to support Vietnam in implementing the Project on Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control in the Greater Mekong Subregion, part of the master project. including 3 countries Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam with a total budget of 38.78 million USD. The overall goal of the project is to reduce the morbidity and mortality rates of common communicable diseases, control major epidemics, and reduce the disease burden for people in the Mekong sub-region, specifically. : (i) strengthening the capacity of the national anti-epidemic surveillance and response system; (ii) enhancing prevention and control of infectious diseases for at-risk populations and (iii) strengthening regional cooperation in infectious disease prevention and control.

In Vietnam, the Project on Infectious Diseases Control in the Mekong sub-region has been implemented on schedule, with the goals and effectiveness, in particular: (i) strengthening capacity of the surveillance and response system. national translation through perfecting the mechanism, building the Law on Infectious Disease Control and its guiding documents to implement; investment in vehicles (motorbikes), anti-epidemic equipment, laboratory equipment, for 14 project provinces, cities, 60 districts and districts; investment in vehicles (cars), anti-epidemic equipment for 12 international medical quarantine centers, and 5 quarantine units under the preventive medicine center; improve capacity for epidemic surveillance, response, laboratory skills, communication skills for provincial and district preventive medicine staff through short and long-term training courses, visits and study sessions. experiences of countries in the region and around the world. Deploy the model of early warning, quick response to early detection of infectious diseases in the community, and take timely anti-epidemic measures. (ii) enhance the prevention and control of infectious diseases for specific at-risk populations: Support vaccination and communication activities to prevent Japanese encephalitis for at-risk subjects at 5 key provinces and cities; implementing the integration to care for sick children in 5 provinces and cities; implementing dengue prevention activities in the community for 14 communes of 7 key provinces and cities; active prevention of earth-borne helminthiasis in 14 project provinces and cities. (iii) strengthening regional cooperation in the prevention of infectious diseases through exchange of experiences, organizing regional seminars and forums on technical expertise in infectious disease prevention, and initial cooperation. specifically in controlling the spread of diseases across borders.

However, together with the development of new diseases that threaten economic development in the region, better coordination between countries in the region, especially in border areas between countries, is required. The project on Infectious Diseases Control in the Mekong sub-region phase 2 (CDC2) is built to inherit the results of CDC1 as well as to meet the requirements set out in the coming years of the Government of Vietnam in particular. and general area. The project will be implemented in three countries Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam, including provinces divided into three groups of economic corridors that share a common border, to support disease prevention in each country. in the region, proceeding to control the spread of infectious diseases across the border.
